Yeti Tool celebrates sales milestone with a laser robot party

The Yeti Tool team recently celebrated a sales milestone with a laser robot party, constructing the unique bits of kit with our very own SmartBench.

Having constructed the 1,000th SmartBench order, and realising it was a special moment for Yeti Tool, it was decided to throw a huge party with two special guests to make it an event to remember.

The unique portable large-format CNC router SmartBench provided the flexibility to construct the two huge laser robots for the party.

Ed Sells, Technical Director for Yeti Tool, said:

"We realised recently that we were about to make our 1,000th SmartBench unit, and thought we have to have a party. We started planning what we wanted at this party, including building massive robots with lasers on them to operate either side of the DJ."

"We've had such a mission to get through these last few years in the climate of everything that's going on with Covid, we need to have a bit of fun."

The party project wasn't an easy mission for Ed and the SmartBench design team, as both robots would be large and heavy, therefore needing to be safe.

Also, the project build had to be completed within a week around other tasks.

"It was cool, but it did turn out to be one of the most stressful projects I've ever done," added Ed.

The main technical aim was to construct both the robots with all CNC being routed using a SmartBench.

Ed's role as the lead designer for the two robots was to deliver them as cost-effectively as possible, and on a tight timeframe.

"They were robots for a party at the end of the day, so the budget wasn't massive. I went with the same design as used in an anglepoise lamp."

After a tense week of development, testing and making design changes the robot arms with lasers were ready for the celebrations to begin.

"When you do any project, you spend so long investing your imagination as to what it's going to look like and until it's actually there you don't know what it's going to be or how it's going to work," said Ed.

"But when we got them both working, it was everything we'd hoped for. We had two massive robots four metres high doing everything we imagined they would. We got the lights out, lasers on, sounds sorts - good times!"
