How to test run the spindle

Test running the spindle for diagnostics

Powering the spindle from SmartBench

Load the spindle into the ZHead and connect it as shown in this article.

How to turn the spindle on

Navigate to the CAD/CAM App then to the Move section. Press the “Spindle on” button (shown below in the red box).

You should hear the spindle come on.

How to “Digital” speed test

Make sure the data cable is CONNECTED (the data cable is the smaller of the two cables exiting the top of the spindle).

This means that the speed is controlled by the console. When pressed, the button shown above will call for a maximum speed of 25,000 RPM.

How to “Manual” test

Make sure the data cable is DIS-CONNECTED.

This means that the speed is controlled by the thumbwheel on the top of the  spindle. The number 1-6 indicates the requested speed. Reference speeds are available on the side of the spindle.

Powering the spindle directly (not through SmartBench)

As part of your diagnostics, you may want to power the spindle directly, outside of SmartBench, to ensure that the ZHead is not influencing spindle behaviour.

You may power the spindle directly with IEC C13 plug, at the voltage stated on the spindle:

When the spindle is powered outside SmartBench’s ZHead, NEVER power the spindle directly with a cutter installed i.e. remove any cutters from the collet first.

In this configuration (i.e. no data cable connected), the speed will be controlled by the thumbwheel, as described in the “Manual” speed test above.
