Cutter Flutes

Why do different router cutters have different numbers of flutes?

The higher the number of flutes, the better the surface finish - but the slower the feed rate. This is due to "chip clearance".

More flutes mean there's less space for the chips to exit, therefore the feed needs to be slower to allow the chips time to evacuate through a smaller void.
