What is the laser datum?

This article will give you a quick overview of what the laser datum is.

The laser datum is a feature on SmartBench PrecisionPro that allows you to position your XY datum using a laser crosshair.

You would normally set your XY datum with the tool. However, the thickness of the tool, and the way the spindle is positioned inside the Z Head can make it difficult to quickly position it over your target.

The laser is positioned at the front of the Z Head, and the laser crosshair is projected onto the bed of SmartBench.

It’s easy to see exactly where the centre of the crosshair sits over your target, making datum setting much faster - perfect for quick turnarounds.

In this section, we will cover:

  • How to set up and calibrate the laser datum

  • How to set the XY datum with the laser enabled

  • How to toggle the laser datum
