Diagnosing and fixing loose pinions (Lower X Beam)

This article will help to diagnose the problem of loose pinions on the Lower X Beam.

If you have loose pinions this may cause problems with precision machining and your job may not cut to the desired profile.

A: Pinion

Diagnosing loose pinions 

Firstly, make sure SmartBench is turned on. Move the Lower X Beam away from the home end to perform a rocking test. Try to push and pull one side of the beam at a time along the Y axis.

If the pinion is loose, there will be play in the beam as you rock it. It is normal for there to be some flex as the wheels compress but there shouldn’t be any play.

Be aware that excess movement could indicate a loose pinion or bad wheel setting so if you do feel excess movement remove the Lower X Beam and isolate the pinion by trying to spin it on the motor shaft.

A: Pinion

Tightening the pinions 

Only follow this procedure once after diagnosing loose pinions.

The pinion is mounted on the shaft of the motor and fixed in place with four grub screws. 

You can use a 2mm allen key to tighten the grub screws. 

Be aware that you may not be able to tighten the grub screws due to the loctite applied in the factory. If you can’t, please submit a support ticket here.

While tightening you can also identify whether the screws were loose or not.
